CONDUCTORS - Using NASM Accreditation to Help Improve Choirs

The workshop is designed to explore practical and creative approaches to obtaining and maintaining accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music - (NASM). The participants will interact with the presenter(s) in a Q&A forum to glean information pertinent to updates and expectations from this accrediting organization.  Emphasis and insight will be placed on the accreditation process, best practices for working with administrators, a viable curriculum program, costs, and strategies that will benefit small and large ensembles within the HBCU's.

CONNECTING: Managing, Branding and Marketing  - "Growing choirs beyond the walls of the classroom"

This is an interactive workshop designed to expand and implement productive marketing strategies for your choral programs. Emphasis is placed on, branding, attracting new audiences, managing resources, collaborating with sponsors/partners, partnering with local and national arts councils, classroom management, student motivation, alumni participation, community involvement, and the importance of the use of social media.

ACROSS genres: Attracting New Audiences with New Choral Literature

This workshop is designed to introduce choral literature that is appropriate for any academic programs and church music programs.  The program will function as a reading session of new literature of modern day composers as well as those hard to find scores related to the literature of African American composers.  Whether the participant is in high school, college, a professional organization or a church group interested in seeking a greater understanding, the presented literature will strengthen the relationship it has with the cultural values and history of each society.  Literature includes: Hymns, Spirituals, Anthems, Gospel, Jazz, World Music, and excerpts from larger works, etc.  The participant will possess a working knowledge of the introduced literature in terms of stylistic interpretation.

MUSIC and Support:  Finding the Money

This hands-on workshop is designed to develop writing strategies, program positioning, and tools pertinent to successfully submitting a competitive grant proposal to corporations, and foundations as well as for state and federal organizations funds.  This workshop will also identify traditional and non-traditional approaches to finding money for your choral programs and departments by linking your college or university to the community. This workshop will also provide methodologies and identify both traditional and non-traditional approaches to linking your existing programs to funding sources. This is a two-part workshop session.

PROGRAMS:  Best Practices in Building Choirs in a time of Shrinking Budgets

This roundtable session will be led by panelists who will provide successful strategies that your music department can implement to move your program ahead due to shrinking budgets.  Participants will have an opportunity to share ideas that have netted results for them in these challenging economic times.  Additionally, participants will discuss tools and resources that can assist in survival and growth with limited resources and funding.  Time will be allotted for discussion of common goals/concerns and possible solutions that will enhance music programs across regions.
